Not All Activewear Feels the Same

SAME COLLECTION. DIFFERENT FEELS.

A fabric designed for a lightweight running tee shouldn't feel like your favourite leggings, or your post-workout hoodie.

That's why our BE ACTIVE Collection uses a range of fabrics chosen for different kinds of movement, comfort and everyday wear.

Some are:

SOFT + HIGH-STRETCH

For that smooth, close-to-the-body feel.

SMOOTH + SUPPORTIVE

For a little more structure while you move.

LIGHT + BREATHABLE

For training, running and warmer days.

WARM + SUBSTANTIAL

For layering, recovery days and everything after the workout.

The best fabric isn't the heaviest, stretchiest or softest one.

It's the one that feels right for what you're doing.

What Does GSM Mean?

FIRST THINGS FIRST: WHAT IS GSM?

You'll see GSM throughout this guide. It stands for grams per square metre and tells us how much a square metre of fabric weighs.

In simple terms:

LOWER GSM - Usually means a lighter, less substantial fabric.

HIGHER GSM - Usually means more weight and substance.

But here's the important part: GSM ISN'T A QUALITY SCORE.

A higher number doesn't automatically mean a better fabric.

Two fabrics can have the same GSM and feel completely different depending on their fibre blend, whether they're knitted or woven, how much stretch they have, and how the fabric has been constructed.

You can read more about GSM on our Blog Page - Beyond The Outfit.

THE SWEET TREAT GSM SCALE

How weight changes the feel.

Weight is only part of the story when it comes to fabric.

That's why different GSM levels are designed for different kinds of movement, comfort and wear.

Less weight. Easy movement. Ideal when breathability and lightweight comfort matter most.

You’ll find it in our:

Running and lightweight layering pieces.

GSM Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

IT'S ONLY PART OF THE PUZZLE.

Think of GSM as one piece of the fabric puzzle. How a garment actually feels also depends on:

FIBRE BLEND

What the fabric is made from.

STRETCH

How easily it moves with you.

RECOVERY

How the fabric returns after being stretched.

CONSTRUCTION

Whether it's knitted, woven, textured or brushed.

GARMENT DESIGN

How the fabric is cut, fitted and looks on the body.

That's why two pieces with exactly the same GSM can feel completely different when you put them on.

Meet the Fibres

WHAT'S IT ACTUALLY MADE FROM?

You don't need a textile degree to understand your activewear. Here are the fibres you'll see most often throughout our BE ACTIVE Collection.

Slideshow

NYLON / POLYAMIDE

Smooth, durable and commonly used in stretch activewear.

We use nylon and polyamide blends throughout many of our fitted performance pieces because they work beautifully with elastane to create flexible, close-fitting fabrics.

Think: smooth • flexible • movement-ready

Good to know: Nylon is a type of polyamide, so you may see either term used depending on our manufacturer's fabric specification.

And What Does Elastane Do?

THE STRETCH PART.

You'll notice elastane appearing in many of our BE ACTIVE fabric blends.

Its job is exactly what you'd expect: stretch and recovery.

Combined with fibres such as nylon, polyamide or polyester, elastane helps fabrics move with the body, and return to their original shape after stretching.

But the percentage isn't the whole story.

One type of 25% elastane-blend fabric won't necessarily feel the same as every other 25% elastane-blend fabric, because the finished result also depends on the knit, yarn, weight, construction and garment design.

MORE NUMBERS ≠ AUTOMATICALLY BETTER.

It's all about the balance.

KNIT OR WOVEN?

HERE'S WHY IT MATTERS.

Most of our BE ACTIVE garments are made from knitted fabrics.

Knits naturally flex and follow the body, which is why they’re used across our bras, leggings, tanks and other movement-focused pieces.

KNIT
WOVEN

KNIT - Flexible • body-following • movement-friendly

WOVEN - Crisper • more structured • freer-moving

AND THAT'S WHY GSM ISN'T THE WHOLE STORY.

BREATHABILITY

Breathable doesn’t just mean thin.

Fabric weight matters, but airflow can also be influenced by fibre, knit structure, texture and garment construction.

For BE ACTIVE, we only describe a fabric as breathable where our manufacturer's information supports it.

Sweet Takeaway:

LIGHTWEIGHT ≠ AUTOMATICALLY BREATHABLE

MOISTURE-WICKING

A term we don’t throw around.

Moisture-wicking is about how a fabric moves moisture — and that depends on more than simply being made from polyester or nylon.

Unless that performance is supported for the actual fabric, we’d rather tell you what we know than use a buzzword because it sounds good.

Sweet Takeaway:

NO MAGIC FABRIC WORDS. JUST USEFUL INFORMATION.

FOUR-WAY STRETCH

Four-way stretch means a fabric can stretch both side-to-side and lengthways, helping it move more freely with the body.

But just like GSM, the label doesn’t tell the whole story. Fabric construction, fibre blend and elastane content all affect how that stretch actually feels.

Sweet Takeaway:

FOUR-WAY STRETCH ≠ SAME FEEL IN EVERY FABRIC

SQUAT-PROOF

Does higher GSM mean squat-proof? Not automatically.

Opacity under stretch can be affected by fabric weight, knit density, colour, stretch, fit and garment construction.

So while GSM can help us understand how substantial a fabric is, we don't use GSM alone to promise that a garment is squat-proof.

Sweet Takeaway:

WEIGHT IS PART OF THE STORY — NOT THE WHOLE STORY.

What we will tell you is how each fabric feels, how much stretch it has within our Sweet Meter rating system, and what kind of garment it has been selected for.

Because useful information beats a blanket promise.

How to Read our Sweet Meter

Numbers are useful, but how something is likely to feel is even more useful.

That’s why every BE ACTIVE fabric has a simple Sweet Meter rating to help you compare fabrics across the collection.

🍰 SOFTNESS

1 / 5 — firmer or more technical feel
5 / 5 — our softest-feeling fabrics

⚡ STRETCH

1 / 5 — minimal stretch
5 / 5 — our highest-stretch fabrics

☁️ WARMTH

1 / 5 — light and low-warmth
5 / 5 — our warmest, most insulating fabrics

A simple guide, not a laboratory test. Our Sweet Meter ratings are based on supplier fabric information, fibre composition, GSM and construction.

How to Choose Your Feel

WHAT DO YOU WANT IT TO FEEL LIKE?

Forget fabric names for a second. Start with the feeling you're looking for.

FABRIC CARE

A bit of care. a lot more wear.
START WITH YOUR GARMENT'S CARE LABEL

Your garment's care label is always the best place to start. Different fabrics, finishes and construction methods can require different types of washing and drying treatments — even if the clothes are from the same collection.

Before washing, check the recommended washing temperature, washing method, drying instructions and whether ironing is suitable. And remember to never iron over your favourite print.

Think of our Fabric Care Guide as your everyday reference, and your garment's care label as the final word.

A little attention before the first wash can help keep your favourite pieces looking and feeling their best.

WASHING & DRYING

Good fabric care doesn't need to be complicated. A few simple habits can make a big difference.

  • Prepare your garments before washing. Fasten zips and buttons, secure any Velcro closures, and remove detachable padding if recommended by the garment's care instructions.
  • Turn garments inside out before washing to help protect the outer surface, colours and printed details.
  • Hand-wash where instructed. If your garment's care label specifies hand-washing, use cool water and a mild detergent. Handle the fabric gently and avoid twisting or wringing.
  • Use a laundry bag when needed. A mesh garment bag can help protect delicate fabrics, straps and smaller items from snagging or tangling during machine washing.
  • Wash with similar colours and separate delicate pieces from rough fabrics, Velcro, zips and anything that might snag.
  • Keep rough fabrics separate. Washing soft activewear with towels, denim or garments with abrasive fastenings can increase friction, lint transfer and potential pilling.
  • Choose a gentle cycle and cool water when permitted by the care label, particularly for stretchy activewear.
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid excessive amounts. Skip fabric softener on performance fabrics unless the care label specifically permits it.
  • Avoid bleach and unnecessary soaking. Harsh chemicals and prolonged soaking can affect some colours, prints and fabric finishes. Always check the care label before using stain treatments.
  • Air-dry where possible, following the label instructions. Keep bright colours and printed garments out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Be careful with heat. High temperatures from dryers can affect elastane, fabric finishes, prints and garment shape. Always check the label before adding your favourite activewear to the dryer.

And one little reminder: more detergent and hotter water don't necessarily mean a better wash. Sometimes, a gentler approach is all your favourite pieces need.

KEEP YOUR FABRICS LOOKING THEIR BEST

Your clothes work hard for you. Here's how to return the favour.

Give them a little breathing room. After workouts or busy days, allow damp garments to air out rather than leaving them bundled up in a gym bag or washing basket.

Watch out for friction. Rough surfaces, Velcro, zips and abrasive accessories can cause snagging, pilling or surface wear, particularly on softer knits.

Treat marks early. Gently blot spills and follow the garment's care instructions. Avoid harsh scrubbing or applying stain removers without checking their suitability first.

Store with care. Fold heavier knits and sweatshirts to help prevent stretching, and make sure everything is completely dry before putting it away.

Rotate your favourites. Giving garments time between wears and washes can help reduce unnecessary wear.

Take extra care with prints and decorative details. Wash printed garments inside out where permitted, avoid harsh rubbing, and never iron directly over logos, transfers or embellishments unless the garment's care instructions specifically allow it.

A little everyday care goes a long way towards keeping your pieces feeling as good as they look.

FABRIC-SPECIFIC CARE TIPS

Different fabrics have different personalities — and a few little care preferences of their own.

  • Nylon & Polyamide Blends

Often used in our smooth, stretchy activewear fabrics. Gentle washing and avoiding excessive heat can help protect their feel, shape and performance.

  • Polyester & Performance Blends

Designed for active days and easy movement. Wash sweaty pieces promptly when practical, avoid excessive heat and skip fabric softener unless the care label permits it, as it can affect some moisture-management finishes.

  • Elastane-Rich Fabrics

That lovely stretch deserves a little TLC. High heat, harsh chemicals and rough handling can affect elastic fibres over time. Gentle washing and careful drying can help maintain their stretch and recovery.

  • Cotton & Cotton-Rich Blends

Comfortable, breathable and wonderfully wearable. Follow the care label to help minimise shrinkage, fading and changes in shape. Reshape gently while damp if appropriate.

  • Rayon Blends

Known for their soft feel and beautiful drape. Some rayon fabrics can be particularly delicate when wet, so follow the care label closely and avoid unnecessary pulling, twisting or wringing.

  • Structured Knits & Fleece-Back Fabrics

For your cosier, more substantial pieces, pay attention to drying and storage. Excessive heat may affect their shape or finish, while folding heavier garments can help prevent stretching.

The Sweet Treat rule: care for the fabric you have, not just the collection it belongs to. Two garments might look similar but may require slightly different treatment.

CHOOSE YOUR FEEL.THEN MAKE IT YOURS.

Some days call for soft and stretchy.
Some call for structured and supportive.
Others call for the biggest, cosiest layer you can find.
